How to turn a singular noun into plural
In order to turn a word into plural form in Spanish you must follow a simple rule similar to the one used in English.
- For words ending in consonants you should add “es”
Example 1: el árbol (the tree) – los árboles (the trees)
Example 2: la pared(the wall) – las paredes (the walls)
- For words ending in an unaccented vowel just add “s”
Example 3: el perro(the dog) – los perros (the dogs)
Example 4: la caja(the box) – las cajas (the boxes)You should also have in mind that:
- Words ending in “z”, drop the “z” and replaces it for “ces”
Example 5: el juez(the judge) – los jueces (the judges)
Example 6: la actriz(the actress) – las actrices (the actresses)
- Words ending in the stressed vowel “é” just adds “s”
Example 7: el café (the coffee) – los cafés (the coffees)
- Words ending in other stressed vowels have an “es” added.
