LAST MINUTE INFORMATION: Actualization 5 March 2010
An 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck central Chile on Saturday February 27th. Santiago is about five hours to the north and about 200 miles from the epicenter. The capital shook for about 90 seconds and had mayor damages but nothing compared to the devastation caused at Concepcion, five hours away.
All students are safe and we are in contact with all of them. In one of the student residences a water pipe was broken that is why the 2 students have been moved to a hotel and now have been received by one our host families. City areas where students are currently staying have not been severly damaged.
Our school building was already inspected by professionals who confirmed us that the building is safe. Still we are maintaining as little as possible activity at school and are not yet back to class routine, because we do not have the official confirmation yet. Students who come to our school might note smaller damages, but we assure you that this is not a sign that the building is not safe. Reparations will only start in 15-20 days when the period of ongoing seisms will be over. We are hoping to get back to normal school routine as soon as possible.
Many of the first reactions of the students have been that they want to return home right away. It has been a shock for everyone and it is important to stay calm. We have been dealing with the situation during the entire day today and will continue to support all the students and their needs.
All the facilities of the school except water are available again. Still there might be interruptions in the communication services. It is hard for family members and friends to communicate with their relatives in Santiago but we assure you that all the students are safe and well-off. Know that students are staying together and are being guided by us. The government has requested for everyone to stay at home and to get out only if necessary. That is why we give our students homework to keep them occupied and to provide them with as much Spanish lessons possible.
We have an emergency contact phone which was down due to this episode. You can reach us under 0056-22226371 (9am-6pm local time) and 0056-268475059 (emergency). Please be aware that there still might be interruptions in the service. We will be updating the website.
Students traveling to Santiago in the next two weeks may be rerouted to Buenos Aires. If due to the current situation you would like to relocate your course to one of our destinations in Argentina we can arrange this for you. Please contact us 0054-351-4227590 (8am-8pm local Argentinean time) or under info@intercoined.org to make arrangements.
